To the Editor:
To all the registered voters who cast their ballots Nov. 8, “Congratulations” for exercising your civic rights. To everyone who was involved in campaigning, “Thank you” for acting on your convictions. To everyone else, “Welcome” to another opportunity to be involved in our local government.
The beauty and strength of the democratic system is that there is room for all of us. We can express differing viewpoints, agree to disagree, and choose various means and levels of involvement. Being an informed, respectful citizen is a goal we can all embrace. It is only in passivity and ignorance that fear can immobilize us. I sincerely believe that the best ideas rise to the top in an environment of transparency, truthfulness and civility. We are diverse enough to offer a variety of approaches and perspectives, yet as a community, we should strive for common ground and cooperation.
So - let your voice be heard. Do not hesitate to contact elected officials, ask questions, make suggestions and be part of the dialogue. Take advantage of emails, phones and meetings to communicate. Don’t be a stranger to local government.
