Don’t blame movies for decision to smoke

To the Editor:

Not impressed with the recent Letter’s to the Editor from the sixth graders about smoking in movies.

For one thing if you read them they were coached as to what to say in them. I honestly want to know how many kids are watching a movie for people who smoke and if they are they are not enjoying the movie and who pointed out the smoking in those Disney movies.

The first thing you should know kids is watching a person smoke does not make you smoke…if you are that easy to make do things then I suggest you never leave your home. As this is like the question if your friend jumps off a bridge are you going to?

It is up to you if you smoke, you do not want to you will not how do I know this, Well I am much older then you and back when I was your age just about everyone my folks knew smoked there was lots of smoking in the movies, TV shows, everyday life and I did not take up smoking, yes I tried one cig at 13.

I asked my mom she said ok as long as it was in front of her. I took three puffs and put the cig out, I could not stand the taste and had no intention of learning to like it. And have not even thought of trying another one…so again it is your choice if you smoke not seeing others do it or peer pressure will make you if you do not want to. There comes a point in your life what you do is on your head not the movies, or people around you, so you make the choice and live with it, do not blame others for it.

I find it interesting that kids only pick up bad habits from movies or TV show how is that, it seems to me if they pick up bad ones than why not the good ones like respect, many shows and movie, show that but hard to see it in some kids.

If all bad things come from watching movies then what movies did the Romans watch when they were throwing people to the lions.. What show did the Patriots watch when they decided to become a country of their own. What was it Jessie James watched to rob trains or Al Capone when he decided to take over Chicago?

It is not up to the movie industry to keep it out of your view that is not realistic people smoke in the real world you just have to make up your mind not to. And if it helps talk to people who have then stopped. Or better yet find someone who has smoked for decades and listen to them cough in the morning if that does not stop you then there is nothing that will. There are enough reminders in the world around you everyday that should show you better then a movie rating to not smoke.

Happy with my choice to not smoke.
