To the Editor:
The St. Lawrence County Legislature met on Monday, June 27 and legislators were told that New York State owes St. Lawrence County over $15.5 million.
Apparently at this time last year, it was over $8 million that was owed to the county.
This is a troubling trend and it puts a strain on our cash balance. If we are forced to borrow money we could be paying interest rates at 3-4 percent.
Why should St. Lawrence County taxpayers be forced to give an interest-free loan to New York State? Why should we be forced into the situation of paying interest charges on money that we are owed by the state?
I asked Kevin Felt, the county treasurer, if we were withholding funds from towns and villages. He indicated that we are not and I was pleased to hear his answer.
I’m glad that we are treating our towns and villages appropriately. I hope the state would follow our lead.
