To the Editor:

Technology can be intimidating, confusing, and sometimes downright exasperating.

The Fred W. Cleveland Computer Center in the Potsdam Library offers classes to help area residents improve their digital literacy skills, but classes are not the preferred learning environment for some people.

Many of them are more comfortable in a 1 on 1 private setting, where they can interrupt the instructor as needed, learn at their own pace, meet when it’s convenient, not risk appearing ignorant in front of other class participants, ask questions about specific problems they’re having and get just the information they need without participating in an entire class which includes topics they already understand.

The center offers individualized instruction at no cost to participants and if at all possible, these are scheduled at a time that’s convenient for the learners.

Topics include basic introduction to computer use, using a smartphone, computer programs such as Microsoft Word, internet safety, web design, selling on eBay, using Dropbox and social media, managing digital photos, and many, many others.

If someone has attended a class and would like additional help to make full use of the information they already have, or to learn more on that topic, an individual session might be just what’s needed.

The center offers convenient hours, including morning, afternoon, some in late afternoon/evening as well as limited hours on Saturday and Sunday.

It’s easy to make arrangements for the individualized instruction by contacting the library at 265-7230, asking to be connected to the computer center, and indicating what help is needed. The staff chooses an instructor who’s knowledgeable about the topic requested and sets up a 1–1.5 hour meeting with an instructor at a time that’s possible for both the learner and the teacher.

If additional meetings are needed, they can easily be arranged. This type of instruction is available for anyone, age is not a consideration, and the goal is to provide help if at all possible for all areas of technology.

Those who are interested in attending one of the center’s small classes (usually 4 or 5 participants) can find a complete list of current offerings on various local print and audio media, on the Library’s website, or by visiting the Potsdam Library’s circulation desk for a hard copy.

The center is a valuable community resource, and it is here to help all who wish to take advantage of the services it offers. Contact the center at 265-7230 with questions or for additional information.
