To the Editor:
Massena Music Friends would like to thank everyone who supported our recent fund raising efforts on behalf of the Massena Central School music department. The guitar raffle, made possible by the generous contribution of a Takamine EG440 acoustic/electric guitar by Mike Olson of Mainly Music, netted approximately $1,700. These funds, combined with a similar amount raised by last winter’s Messiah concert, and about $350 raised by February’s concert by the Northern Symphonic Winds, will be dedicated to the purchase of instruments that are not possible to fund with the existing school budget.
Congratulations to the first, second and third prize winners of the raffle. The $100 third prize was won by Anthony Garcia of Massena, the $200 second prize by Shawn Beauvais of Massena and the grand prize of the guitar went to young Logan Chapman, from North Carolina, who was visiting family in the Massena area.
The first full year of Massena Music Friends has been a rewarding one. We have successfully raised over $4,500 that will help keep our school music program strong and vibrant, give the students involved an increased opportunity to benefit and show tangible support for their dedicated teachers. We have advocated for continued funding for the music program, provided volunteer support for concerts and music department events and recruited over 200 members to support the cause. We have recognized the efforts of our talented students and staff, established bylaws and a governing structure for the group, including elected officers, and have made strides toward an even more formal incorporation. We’ve also had considerable fun along the way.
Next school year, we hope to implement some innovative fundraising ideas and continue our presence at school concerts and our year-long support and advocacy of music in our schools. All of our efforts will be dedicated to supporting the students and teachers that make our school music program in Massena special.
MMF is very grateful to everyone who joined our group, donated time, food or money, bought a raffle or concert ticket, or supported our efforts in any way. The Massena music program, at all levels and in all schools, is a shining star in our community and worthy of our support. If you are a parent of a Massena student involved in the music program, or just someone with a little bit of time to devote to supporting the performing arts and our youth, we’d love to see you at our August membership meeting, Thursday, Aug. 9, 7 p.m. at the high school band room.
