To the Editor:
As former Mayor, it is with pride to share a few of the Village of Canton's accomplishments in 2014 and 2015. The team consisted of the board, hard working personnel, the town, county, and state, colleges, organizations, businesses and community members.
We did not increase taxes; we decreased debt; negotiated an overdue police contract; hired a village economic developer securing over one million dollars for several projects; started Phase 2 of the water search project; upgraded technology and renovated the golf course clubhouse; started a sustainability committee resulting in solar projects; supported the complete streets initiative; purchased several pieces of needed equipment/vehicles; and enhanced trails.
We were successful in securing $150,000 from Senator Ritchie to try to replace the municipal building windows and renovate Bend in the River Park including a permanent outdoors restroom. Several village streets, sidewalks, and water/sewer lines were repaired/replaced. The Canton Community Action Plan was updated. We participated on the Waterfront and Shared Services Committees.
Law and code enforcement were priority as we focused on illegal activities and dilapidated properties. We worked towards bringing in new businesses and housing. The tree committee planted several trees. Our historian researched/preserved history and sought out better space. Our dog control officer made sure several animals were cared for.
Government is at its best when we focus on the people, welcome public engagement, establish trust, and work together for humanity.
I would appreciate your vote for Canton town supervisor on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.
