Canton Deputy Mayor Dalton will seek GOP nod for mayor

To the Editor:

As our current mayor, Mary Ann Ashley, is not running for re-election, it is my intent to seek the nomination of the Republican Party for my candidacy as mayor of Canton at the upcoming caucus.

I believe that my roles in village government as a current trustee, sitting deputy mayor, and former fire department chief give me the knowledge and experience to lead our village.

In the recent past, the Village Board has focused on economic development, neighborhood zoning issues, and controlling the budget. While the village budget is supported by a number of private property and small business owners, it is also defined by many of our tax-exempt, educational and charitable organizations. I recognize that the combined total of these stakeholders is what makes this the Village of Canton.

Our current board has worked well as a team to address the issues that affect us in the village and we have done a fine job meeting our objectives. One of my particular areas of focus since becoming deputy mayor is the development of a municipal solar farm for the community. To date, we have contracted a project that will ultimately save our taxpayers nearly $1.9 million over the next 20 years.

As mayor, my focus will be strengthening village infrastructure, a continued focus on supporting our work force, and controlling our finances. The village needs consistency and stability as we transition from Mayor Ashley and I am committed to continuing our progress. As deputy mayor, I understand the workload; as a recent retiree, I have the time required to give it my full attention.

I thank Mayor Ashley for her service and wish her the best as she continues her journey.

Michael E. Dalton
