POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam softball players Jordan Sarat and Ashley Thayer, Winthrop, have been recognized by the State University of New York Athletic Conference.
The two were recognized after the Bears’ season opening sweep of Lyndon
State in a doubleheader March 1. Sarat is the conference’s Player of the Week, while Thayer is the SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week.
Sarat, a freshman, hit two homeruns and allowed three runs on four hits in six innings pitched in her collegiate debut. In the second game of the twin bill, Sarat hit her first homer in the top of the fifth to put Potsdam up 2-1.
With the Bears down to their final out, trailing 3-2 in the top of seventh, the freshman connected for her second blast of to tie the score. Sarat finished the contest two-for-three with two runs batted in and seven strikeouts on the mound.
Thayer notched both wins over the hornets. In the opener, the junior pitched a four-hit shutout in Potsdam’s five-inning 9-0 win. She struck out five. She then pitched two innings in relief in game two. Thayer allowed just one hit, while striking out two as the Bears rallied for a 6-3 eight-inning victory.
Potsdam (2-0) is off until March 22, when they will face Ecclesia College at 9 a.m. in Titusville, Fla.
