Michael J. Newtown and Daniel J. Gagliardi were recently promoted at SUNY Canton.

Newtown was recently hired as the school's dean after serving the college as dean in an interim capacity.

Previously, he was an associate professor who helped create the college's alternative and renewable energy program.

He has conducted grant-funded research into pellet combustion in collaboration with the Cornell Cooperative Extension and Clarkson University, according to a press release from the college.

Newtown was recognized for his outstanding service to the college with the President's Meritorious Service Award in 2009, the release said.

He previously earned his master of science in engineering and global operation management from Clarkson, his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering technology from Rochester Institute of Technology and his associate degree in mechanical engineering technology from SUNY Canton, the release said.

Newtown is currently working on his doctorate in fluids mechanics and heat transfer at Clarkson University.

Gagliardi was promoted to professor, which is the highest position available for teaching professionals at the college, the release said.

He was “instrumental in creating the college's mathematics minor and developed several new courses within the program,” the release said.

He has published numerous research articles and routinely guest lectures at mathematics conferences.

He received the college's Distinguished Faculty award in 2015, the release said.

Gagliardi earned his doctorate in mathematics from North Carolina State University, his master of science in mathematics from New Mexico State University and his bachelor of arts in mathematics from SUNY Purchase.
