“A Very Special Place -- The Wanakena Footbridge” took second place in the family/community group category in TAUNY's annual Sugar and Spice Competition. It also won for Best Representation of a TAUNY Register of Very Special Places site.

CANTON -- TAUNY's 2014 gingerbread contest, with the theme local landmarks with emphasis on TAUNY's Register of Very Special Places, brought many imaginative creations including the Redford Carousel, Chapin's Country Market in Rensselaer Falls, the Big Pine in Wanakena, the Wanakena Footbridge and several interpretations of Donnelly's Ice Cream Stand in Saranac Lake.

The winners in the children category were Maddie Wheeler and Clare Sullivan-Catlin for their rendition of Santa's Workshop, and Hannah and Gaige Gagnon for their "Kid's Gingerbread Dream."

In the youth category, first place was taken by Sarah Bailey, Gretchen Warner and Lindsey Fraser for their Donnelly's entitled “Twist of Love;” Carter, Maureen, Meaghan and Michael Pierce took second place with their Boldt Castle Powerhouse, and third place was captured by Celeste Fullerton for her Redford Carousel that actually turns.

The adults saw Sue Wilder taking an award for an incredibly detailed Donnelly's, and Jen Berbrich and Derrick Conway who used the medium to bring attention to the role of Chapin's Country Store in their community.

First place in the Family/Community Group category went to Brennan and Ann Fullerton for their reinterpretation of Donnelly's in winter, with snow-people customers; second place went to Angie Oliver, Erin Swick, Mary Jo Muse, Sue Novak and Susan Ziemba for their incredible Wanakena Footbridge, which also won for Best Representation of a TAUNY Register of Very Special Places; and third was taken by Harper Davis and Deb Wohunsidner's Big Pine.

The judges have chosen this year's winners citing exquisite attention to detail, incredible scale, and fantastic use of peppermint stained glass. Voting for the People's Choice award continues until Dec. 19, and Sugar and Spice will remain on display until Dec. 23 at The TAUNY Center, 53 Main St.
