CANTON -- SUNY Canton assistant professor Emily Hamilton-Honey recently won the St. Lawrence County Chapter of the American Association of University Women's (AAUW) Research Award for her in-depth study of young women's serial novels.

Hamilton-Honey teaches English at the college.

She received her citation from the St. Lawrence County Branch of AAUW at a fall membership meeting.

"AAUW is a wonderful organization that advocates tirelessly for female faculty and professionals all over the country," Hamilton-Honey said. "Our local St. Lawrence County branch does a tremendous amount to encourage education and leadership among women and girls in our community. It made me very happy that they felt my work was worthy of recognition."

Hamilton-Honey serves as the college's gender studies curriculum coordinator. She is the author of a book in progress titled "Girls to the Rescue: Mixed Messages From American Girls' Series Fiction in World War I."

Her research is based on books including “The Red Cross Girls,” “The Khaki Girls” and the “Ruth Fielding” novels. The book is scheduled to be published next year.

Last year, she received the Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Affirmative Action/Diversity Leave Program Award through United University Professions, the union representing faculty and professional staff at the college.

Hamilton-Honey recently had an article accepted for the December publication in the Journal of American Culture based on Louisa May Alcott's first novel.

She is also on the steering committee for the Associated Colleges' Gender and Sexuality Studies Conference, which will be held Feb. 10-11, 2018 at SUNY Potsdam.
