CANTON -- St. Lawrence University’s 2016 Frank P. Piskor Lectureship was recently awarded to Donna Alvah, associate professor and Margaret Vilas Chair of U.S. history.

The lectureship includes research funding for a scholarly project and a public lecture to be held in April 2016.

Alvah’s two related projects include scrutinizing ideas about children and youth during the Cold War, including their perspectives, experiences and participation, and to contribute to the study of American Cold War foreign relations, culture and society.

Her first project, titled “Children and the Prospect of Nuclear War, 1960s to 1980s,” examines both fears of nuclear war expressed by children and also adults’ concerns about children harboring these fears.

The second project, titled “Children in the Second Indochina War,” investigates how “the American War” affected the young in this region, as well as how they experienced and participated in it.

Alvah has published a book on U.S. military families abroad during the early Cold War, and essays on both the wives of U.S. servicemen in the Philippines before World War II and U.S. policy on military families abroad following the Cold War.

She earned her master’s and Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis.

The Piskor Faculty Lectureship was established in 1979 to encourage original and continued research among St. Lawrence faculty members, to recognize and honor scholarship, and to afford the opportunity for faculty to share their learning with the academic community.
