CANTON -- A St. Lawrence University professor has received the public art fellowship from the St. Lawrence County Arts Council to develop a sound-and-photography art exhibit that will span two communities and focus of the region’s rivers.

Wes Kline, assistant professor of photography and video, will receive a $2,500 grant for his public sound art and photography project, titled “Compositions for Rivers.” The work, which will be presented in Canton and Potsdam, will include photographs of area rivers, which will be interpreted by a custom computer program into sound in order to create a “sonic river.”

In the spring, Kline will coordinate with the art departments of local high schools and give students a chance to submit photos for the project. He also intends to present at least two workshops during the summer of 2015, one at St. Lawrence University’s Richard F. Brush Art Gallery in Canton and one at Clarkson University’s Snell Hall in Potsdam.

Images will be submitted using Twitter and will be given a hashtag associated with this project. Kline will begin publicity for the exhibit in the spring.
