POTSDAM —Daniel M. Soule, DO, a specialist in infectious diseases, has achieved certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine: Infectious Disease Specialty.

Dr. Soule collaborates with other healthcare professionals to care for hospitalized patients as part of the hospitalist team at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

As a member of the medical staff of St. Lawrence Health System, he sees patients Friday mornings in Canton, NY.

Board certification involves concentrated study and examination in a doctor’s medical specialty and involves a peer-developed, externally validated review of competency in that area by medical experts in the field, according to the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Board certification assures patients, insurance organizations, and members of the public that a physician has been challenged beyond the basic competency of licensure and is committed to continuous professional development in the field.

Dr. Soule works with the inpatient care team whenever an infectious disease does not respond to the standard of care for therapy or becomes otherwise resistant.

He also participates in education of patients, their families, and the care team regarding antimicrobial resistance—drug resistant organisms and how to minimize drug resistance, including the correct use of antibiotics.

He is also an expert in patient-centered approaches to infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship.

Dr. Soule received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Midwestern University of the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. He subsequently completed an internal medicine residency at Baystate Medical Center of Tufts University School of Medicine in Springfield, MA.

He completed his fellowship in infectious diseases at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Dr. Soule has given invited presentations and published in the peer-reviewed literature on a variety of infectious disease topics, including invasive Aspergillosis.

His community and volunteer experience includes a service in a free health clinic in Worcester, MA, and service at a migrant farm clinic, mentoring elementary students, and participating in a free clean needle exchange program to assist the City of Hartford, CT to reduce the spread of HIV and hepatitis.
