Several Local Girl Scouts were recently among more than 800 to receive the Girl Scout Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards.

Alexis Michael, Heuvelton, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award this year.

The Gold Award is the highest achievement girls can earn in Girl Scouting. The award challenges girls to change the world – or at least their corner of it – to be eligible for college scholarships, according to a press release from the Girl Scouts.

In order to earn the award, girls participate in activities from the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and spend 80 hours working on a community service project that has a sustainable impact on their communities.

She will be recognized at a Young Women of Distinction ceremony following the council’s annual meeting May 30 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva.

Alexis Sunshine Cushman and Margaret Doty of Canton, Madolyn Wainwright of Rensselaer Falls, and Morgan Wright of Ogdensburg received the Girl Scout Silver Award.

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award girls in sixth through eighth grades can earn.

Earning the award “gives girls the chance to show that they are leaders who are organized, determined, and dedicated to improving their communities,” the release said.

To earn the award girls participate in activities in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and spend at least 50 hours working on a community service project that provides a positive lasting impact on their community.

Troop 50221 of Rensselaer and Ogdensburg; Troop 50229 of Rensselaer Falls, Heuvelton, Canton, DeKalb Junction, and Lisbon; Troop 50297 of Brasher Falls and North Lawrence; and Troop 50301 of Black River, Watertown, Fort Drum, and Calcium received the Girl Scout Bronze Award this year.

The Bronze Award is the highest award girls in fourth and fifth grades can earn. Girls work within their troops to earn the award.

To earn the award girls participate in activities in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and spend at least 20 hours working on a community service project that makes a positive impact on their community.

Girls that have earned the Girl Scout Silver and Bronze awards will be recognized at a reception May 17 in Alexandria Bay.
