MASSENA -- The Massena Community Center, St. Lawrence County Council of Senior Citizens, and Office for the Aging recently honored St. Lawrence County seniors Dorothy Locy, Loretta Sharpstene and Daniel Washburn.

The Senior Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Dorothy Locy of Waddington. Locy was recognized for over 50 years of volunteer service.

For ten years she has volunteered with Waddington’s Neighborhood Center, driving 80 miles twice weekly to pick up bread supplies for needy families and for five years she has volunteered with the Waddington Rescue Squad.

Recently she chaired a cook book sale for the SeaWay Valley Senior Club which sold 700 books.

She makes home visits to lonely seniors, along with providing individuals in need with medical transportation and transportation to church services and functions.

She also picks up groceries for seniors.

The Outstanding Contribution by a Senior Citizen Award was presented to Loretta Sharpstene. Sharpstene is president of the Russell Senior Club and encourages seniors to enjoy life by going on trips and seeing plays.

She has been a church volunteer for many years, providing altar flower arrangements and assisting at spaghetti suppers and baking pies.

Sharpstene supports her church’s mission as a volunteer with the children’s summer camp.

She provides transportation for seniors to recreational functions and makes shawls, sweaters and hats for low-income seniors.

She also worked for over 10 years with the county’s adoption unit.

The Jacqueline Sears Award, which recognizes an individual for their volunteer commitment within their community, was awarded to Daniel Washburn of Ogdensburg. Washburn is treasurer of the St. Lawrence County Council of Senior Citizens and Centennial Terrace.

He is also past president of the Ogdensburg Senior Club and a member of their Board of Directors.

Washburn is the treasurer for the Centennial Terrace Tenants Association (CTTA) and helps in the kitchen with dinners and activities.

He is a lay minister and Eucharist minister for Notre Dame.

Recognition Certificates were presented by Nancy Robert, director, St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging, and Sylvia Despaw, president, St. Lawrence County Council of Senior Citizens.

Locy and Sharpstene were also recognized for outstanding contributions to the senior community at the May 6 full board meeting of the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators.
