SeaComm Federal Credit Union awards $500 scholarships to eight North Country residents

SeaComm Federal Credit Union recently awarded $500 Shirley J. Eagles Memorial Scholarships to Jenna French of Fort Covington, Carlee Marsh and Bailey LaBarge of Massena, Jacob Bero of Hogansburg, Paige McCabe of Potsdam, Jeffery Guerard of Brasher Falls, Elizabeth Froats of Madrid and Meghan Grow of Helena.

French, daughter of Tonny and Laura French, graduated from Salmon River Central School with a 99.7 grade point average.

Having a passion and talent for art, she received recognition for her artwork through the Foothill Art Society.

She was also on the principle’s list and a recipient of the North Country Educational Scholarship.

She will be attending SUNY Canton in the fall, with admission to the veterinary science technology program.

Marsh, daughter of Steven and Loralee Marsh, is a graduate of Massena Central High School, ending her high school career with a 95.83 grade point average.

She was accepted to the diagnostic medical sonography (ultrasound) program at Rochester Institute of Technology.

LaBarge is the son of Scott and Darcy LaBarge of Massena. He graduated from Massena Central with a GPA of 92.95.

A member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, LaBarge earned the North Country Scholarship through SUNY Plattsburgh, Academic All-Northern Award and the Sportsmanship All-Northern Award.

He was also recognized for the 2016 Massena Basketball Association Ed Hubert Sportsmanship Award.

LaBarge has been accepted into the criminal justice program at SUNY Potsdam for the fall 2016 semester.

Bero, son of Gary and Melissa Bero, is a graduate of Salmon River Central.

He finished his high school career with a weighted grade point average of 102.24.

A member of the National Honor Society, Bero also earned the Solomon Cook Award, The North Country Educational Scholarship and the Engineering Opportunity Scholarship.

He will attend SUNY Canton in the fall, entering a two year engineering science program. He plans to transfer to Clarkson University in the electrical engineering program.

McCabe, daughter of Thomas and Amy McCabe of Potsdam, graduated from Potsdam Central School with honors.

She was the recipient of the Coaches Award, Second Team All-Northern All-Academic Award and the Perfect Attendance Award.

Having interest in the medical profession, McCabe has been accepted to St. John Fisher College, where she was awarded the St. John Fisher College Founders’ Scholarship, worth $44,000 dollars throughout her college career.

Guerard is the son of Marc and Sarena Guerard of Brasher Falls and a graduate of St. Lawrence Central.

He ended his high school education with a grade point average of 97.0 as a member of the Honor Roll/Principle’s List.

A community advocate, he has volunteered for the American Red Cross blood drives, as well as helped to restore the A-4 Skyhawk plane with the American Legion, and received the American Legion Scholarship.

He also volunteered at the 1050 WYBG radio station and was a summer rec counselor.

Guerard was accepted at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where he will study natural resource management.

Froats, daughter of Jason Froats and Katheryn Logan, graduated from Madrid-Waddington Central School with a GPA of 96.49.

She is the recipient of several scholarships and awards including the SUNY Canton Alumni Scholarship, the Academic All-Northern Award, Dr. Maresca Family Endowment for Nursing Education Scholarship and the P.E. Student Leadership Award.

She also graduated with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors and Mastery in Math and Science.

Froats been accepted into the SUNY Canton nursing program for the fall 2016 semester.

Grow, daughter of Jim and Dinora Grow of Helena, graduated from Brasher Falls Central School with a GPA of 99.03.

Ranking second in her class, Grow was a model student with honors, and a recipient of many awards, including the WPI Scholarship, the Unity Scholarship and the Alcoa Sons and Daughters Scholarship.

She has been accepted into the Worcester Polytechnic Institute where she will study chemical engineering.

The SeaComm Shirley J. Eagles scholarships are awarded each year to college bound students in memory of long time SeaComm employee Shirley Eagles, who lost her life in a car accident in 2004.

Winners are selected based on a wide variety of criteria including academics, volunteer service, scholastic awards and financial need.
