POTSDAM -- Research by SUNY Potsdam Associate Professor of Chemistry Fadi Bou-Abdallah was recently published in four international scientific journals. Three of the papers were co-authored by SUNY Potsdam students -- all of whom have since graduated and are currently pursuing careers in the sciences.

The articles were published in PLoS Pathogens, Biochemistry, the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, and Medicinal Chemistry Communications

The six student co-authors included:

Adeola Awomolo, who is pursuing a medical degree at Upstate Medical University

Brenna Cooper, who is now a pharmacy technician

Matthew Mehlenbacher, who is pursuing a medical degree at the Arizona School of Podiatric Medicine

Justin McNally, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences at the University of Michigan

Tyson Terpstra, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in chemical simulations at the University at Buffalo

Huidong Yang, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in neuroscience at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The articles included:

"Direct Thermodynamic and Kinetic Measurements of Fe(2+) and Zn(2+) Binding to Human Serum Transferrin," published in the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, 2014, Vol. 136. The SUNY Potsdam co-authors include Terpstra, McNally and Bou-Abdallah.

"The Antimalarial Drug Atovaquone Binds to Saposin B with Comparable Affinity to Coenzyme Q10," published in Medicinal Chemistry Communications, 2014, Vol. 5. The SUNY Potsdam co-authors include Mehlenbacher and Bou-Abdallah.

"Iron Acquisition in Bacillus Cereus: The Roles of IlsA and Bacillibactin on Exogenous Ferritin Iron Mobilization," published in PLoS Pathogens, 2014, Issue 2. Bou-Abdallah was a co-author.

"The Functionality of the Three-Sited Ferroxidase Center of E. Coli Bacterial Ferritin (EcFtnA)," published in Biochemistry, 2014, Vol. 53. The SUNY Potsdam co-authors include Bou-Abdallah, Yang, Awomolo and Cooper.
