RAYMONDVILLE -- Ian Murphy Shantie, 23, Raymondville, has completed basic Army training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Shantie attended the 434th Field Artillery Brigade as a member of B Battery, 1st Battalion, 79th AIrfield.
As part of the "Hell Hounds," he received distinctions at the Rifle and Grenade Ranges during his ten-week course. Additionally, he received instruction on basic military drills, ceremonies, courtesies, military justice and values.
Shantie is completing AIT at Fort Sam Houston, Texas in order to become a Medic, after which he will be transferred to Fort Lewis in Washington State. Shantie is a 2008 graduate of Norwood-Norfolk Central School, the son of Gene Earnie and Terry Lee Shantie, brother of six north country men.
Upon completing his four years in the Army, Shantie has made plans to become a nurse.
