Professors at North Country colleges receive various awards and promotions

Professors at SUNY Canton and Potsdam, Clarkson and St. Lawrence universities and SUNY ESF in Wanakena recently received various awards and promotions.

• Kathleen R. Fowler, Kerop D. Janoyan and Daniel T. Valentine of Clarkson University were recently promoted to full professors. Fowler was promoted from associate professor to full professor of mathematics in the School of Arts & Sciences. Janoyan was also promoted from associate professor to full professor of civil and environmental engineering in the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering. Valentine was also promoted from associate professor to full professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering in the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering.

• Two SUNY Potsdam professors were recently appointed to distinguished professor rank. Crane School of Music faculty member Carleen Graham was named a distinguished teaching professor and anthropology professor Karen Johnson-Weiner was named a distinguished service professor.

• Five Clarkson University faculty members were recently honored at a recognition ceremony for “excellence in the classroom and dedication to mentoring students,” according to a press release from Clarkson. Associate Professor and Chair of Communication and Media Bill Karis received the Outstanding Advisor Award. Assistant Professor of Film, Humanities and& Social Sciences Brian Hauser received the Outstanding New Teacher Award, which recognizes teachers in their first four years at Clarkson. The 2015 Outstanding Teaching Award was presented to Farzad Mahmoodi, professor of operations & information systems and Joel Goldschein, endowed chair in global supply chain management. Susan Powers, the Jean and Robert Spence Professor of sustainable environmental systems and associate director for sustainability in the Institute for a Sustainable Environment, received the Residence Hall Association Faculty Award. Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Selma Mededovic Thagard received the Tau Beta Pi Faculty Award.

• Clarkson University professor Poojitha Yapa has been selected as the chairman and organizer of the oil spill modeling session at the 36th International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research World Congress. IAHR has organized this special one-day session for July 2 at The Hague, Netherlands, to create a forum for scientists to determine the current state of the oil spill modeling, industry and government needs, and areas that need to be improved.

• SUNY Canton Assistant Professor Emily Hamilton-Honey recently received funding to continue research on her life-long interest in series novels written for young adults.

• Nine area professors were recently awarded fellowships to support research projects as winners of the T. Urling and Mabel Walker Research Fellowship Programs for 2015. Clarkson University Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science Costel C. Darie and Research Assistant Professor Alisa G. Woods were awarded $5,000 for research on autism spectrum disorder in Northern New York children. Clarkson University Professor Charles J. Robinson, director of Clarkson University's Center for Rehabilitation Engineering Science & Technology, and Professor of Operations and Information Systems Boris Jukic, director of business analytics, were awarded $5,000 for their project "Recycling as a Viable Industry for Supported Employment of Those with Disability." Carol Cady, a geographical information systems specialist and maps librarian at St. Lawrence University, was awarded $4,938 for her project "Digital Agricultural Atlas of St. Lawrence County." Mindy Pitre, an assistant professor of anthropology at St. Lawrence University, was awarded $5,095 for her study "Death in St. Lawrence County: Mapping the Poorhouse Cemetery." Stacy McNulty, the associate director of SUNY ESF's Adirondack Ecological Center, was awarded $4,810 for her project "Assessment of the Role of Recreation in the Distribution and Prevalence of Amphibian Chytrid Fungus in the Adirondack Park and Northern New York." Robert Ewy, an assistant professor of biology at SUNY Potsdam, was awarded $5,000 for a project on "Developing and Promoting Sustainability in the North Country." Clifford S. Rossiter, an associate professor of chemistry at SUNY Potsdam, received $5,000 for his study "Treatment of Bovine Mastitis with Essential Oils," which expounds upon research that was funded by a past Walker Fellowship in 2012.

• Joseph T. Jockel, who researches Canadian defense and its impact abroad, has been named Piskor Professor of Canadian Studies at St. Lawrence University.

• Clarkson University research professor Dana M. Barry won her 20th consecutive award for publication excellence, the APEX 2015 Award, according to Clarkson.
