OGDENSBURG -- Mitchel McCarthy, 12, of Ogdensburg recently tested for his first-degree black belt in front of friends and family.
A student under sixth degree black belt Master Matthew Mooney, McCarthy has been training at Mooney's Martial Arts for the last eight years, coming to class up to three times per week.
During his test he preformed over 30 street self defense techniques, over 20 jiu-jitsu techniques along with wrestling, boxing, kickboxing and board breaking.
With a panel of nine black belt judges, McCarthy “passed with flying colors and was praised for his speed, power, endurance and never say quit attitude,” according to a press release from Mooney.
