The Northern Area Health Education Center (NAHEC) recently presented an Ogdensburg native with the first Bruce C. Potter Memorial Scholarship.

Zeb Fortune, an Ogdensburg native in his second year at Albany College of Pharmacy received the award established in memory of long-time Canton-Potsdam Hospital Administrator and NAHEC Board Chair Bruce C. Potter.

“Bruce was indeed a champion of those living and working in our local communities. His integrity, humility, and vision were instrumental to the development of NAHEC and its mission to connect local people with local healthcare jobs”, said Merchant.

The scholarship is a competitive annual award for high school seniors or non-traditional learners in good standing who have completed one or more NAHEC programs, and have been accepted and will be entering a healthcare training program within the next semester cycle.

Applicants must be residents of Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton, or Essex counties. Selection criteria include academic achievement, community engagement, career plan, and character.

NAHEC is seeking to establish an endowment to ensure the scholarship’s continued viability. NAHEC will host a gala later this fall to raise additional funds for the scholarship endowment.

The Northern Area Health Education Center, Inc., is dedicated to increasing access to quality healthcare. NAHEC was formed in response to an existing healthcare workforce shortage of crisis proportions that is expected to worsen over time given current trends in aging and population demographics.
