OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Area Zonta Club recently held their annual scholarship awards dinner at the Gran View restaurant, recognizing nine students with scholarships totaling $5,600.

Kathryn Sovie was awarded the Young Women in Public Affairs Award, which recognizes young women ages 16 to 19 who demonstrate “superior leadership skills and a commitment to public service and civic causes,” according to a press release from Zonta.

Danielle Guimond, Peyton Lalone, Melissa Proven, Rebekah Robinson, Sydney Sargent, Kathryn Sovie, and Virginia Weir received the Ogdensburg Zonta Club High School Award, which is offered to graduating students from the area serviced by the Hammond, Morristown, Ogdensburg, Lisbon and Heuvelton schools who are pursuing higher education.

The award is based upon “scholarship, character, leadership, service to their school and community, and their desire to succeed,” the release said.

Amanda Honeywell and Hillary Heaton received the Adult Learner Award, which is offered to non-traditional adult women learners who are at least 25 years old and have completed at least one year of higher education.

The applicant must be a permanent resident of St. Lawrence County and reside within a 20-mile radius of Ogdensburg.

Kaitlyn Barney earned the Debbie Abel award, given in memory of a member of the Zonta Club, Debbie Abel.

Debbie “exemplified the meaning of being a Zontain and will be forever missed,” the release said.

Kathryn Sovie also received the Young Woman in Public Affairs award, which is given to a student who “demonstrates commitment to volunteerism and leadership,” according to the release.

Paige Weston rounded out the award recipients with the Jean M Coon Humanitarian Award, named after a Zontian from Syracuse “whose career and reputation and humanitarian efforts where unparalleled,” the release said.
