MASSENA -- Jonathan G. French, 12, was recently promoted to first-degree black belt.

His father, master instructor Jonathan A. French gave the test with assistance from five other black belts.

The younger French is also a second-degree black belt in ITF Tae Kwon Do and is recognized as a black belt through the Association of Martial Artists World Wide. He is also the youngest member of the AMAWW Black Belt Council.

Part of the test involved French defending himself against six adult black belts from different martial art styles at the same time.

"French demonstrated the physical techniques of Joshiki and has shown determination, work ethic, humility, respect for others, and is a phenomenal example of a Martial Art Black Belt," the elder French wrote in an email.
