MASSENA -- The Friends of the Nature Center in Massena awarded a $500 scholarship to Sara Tyo, Massena.

Each year the award is presented to a graduating senior at Massena High School who is accepted to study environmental sciences at a college the upcoming year. The scholarship is given in honor of Dave Corse, who made a huge impact on the Nature Center for more than a decade. Corse volunteered for the Nature Center for many years, focusing on the environmental education program, worked more than 30 years for the NYS DEC and State Parks.

This year, a number of highly qualified students applied and were considered for the scholarship. Tyo was chosen for her dedicated studies, volunteer, and extra-curricular activities. Tyo will study at SUNY ESF and major in environmental biology at Syracuse University.

Students interested in this scholarship for the 2014 school year are asked to contact the Massena High school guidance office in the early spring.
