Massena High School graduating senior Martha Murphy was recently named the 2015 recipient of the Jeannette and Saul Rosenbaum Memorial Scholarship.

Murphy will receive $500 toward her first year of college. She will matriculate this fall at Ithaca College, where she plans to study occupational therapy.

She is the daughter of Jodi Murphy of Racquette River Road, Massena.

The scholarship, named in memory of two lifelong Massena residents, is given annually to a graduating senior at Massena High who made a significant commitment to volunteer service or overcame a significant personal obstacle to attain academic success.

Martha ranks in the top fifth of her graduating class of 232 students. She was honored for her extensive record of community service, including the Link Crew, Jeans-for-Teens, Adopt-a-Troop and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

She also volunteered at the St. Regis Nursing Home. She co-chaired the prom committee and served for four years on Student Council.

The Rosenbaum scholarship is funded by the grandchildren of Saul and Jeannette Rosenbaum, whose children Ruth and Joel graduated from Massena High School in the 1940s.
