CANTON – The Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church will present the Rachel Somers Grant Award to local community activists Chelle Lindahl and Melinda Ely, co-coordinators of the Local Living Festival on June 23.

The award honors people who work to make a more humane and progressive community. The award is in memory of Rachel Somers Grant, a member of the UU Church, teacher, and activist who lived in Canton from 1977 until her death in 1990.

Chelle and Melinda first worked together as volunteers for the North Country Sustainable Energy Fair. They recreated and re-conceived the event with a broader vision of simple and sustainable living, creating the Local Living Venture.

The social action award will be presented to Chelle and Melinda as part of the church’s regular 10:30 a.m. service. The church is located at 3½ East Main Street, across the street from the Village Green in Canton.
