HEUVELTON -- A Heuvelton Girl Scout was recently honored with the Girl Scout Gold Award during a Young Women of Distinction ceremony at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement girls can earn in Girl Scouting. In order to earn the award, girls participate in Girl Scout Leadership Experience activities, and spend 80 hours working on a community service project that has a sustainable impact on their communities.
Alexis Michael of Heuvelton earned the award this year. She was one of 36 girls to receive the Gold Award in 2015 in the 26-jurisdictions served by the Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways.
Michael is a graduate of Heuvelton Central School and is currently attending SUNY Potsdam, where she is studying anthropology.
For her Gold Award “Take Action Project” Michael chose to educate her community about the history of the Pickens General Store and the Famous Abbott sisters.
Living in a community with a substantial Amish population, she also connected the Amish heritage with the local community through a 50-page booklet that she researched, wrote and distributed to the public.
