POTSDAM -- George D. Fulk has been granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor to associate professor of physical therapy in the School of Arts & Sciences.

Fulk has been a faculty member in the Physical Therapy Department at Clarkson University since 2002. He has been a licensed physical therapist since 1994 and has more than 15 years of clinical experience working with individuals with neurological disorders.

He received his bachelor of arts degree in political science from Brandeis University, his master of science in physical therapy from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, and his Ph.D. in physical therapy from Nova Southeastern University.

Fulk's research, teaching and clinical expertise are in the areas of enhancing motor recovery and quality of life in people with neurological health conditions.

His research projects have primarily focused on measuring and improving locomotor capability in people with stroke. Specifically, his research has looked at methods of measuring walking ability and overall participation in people with stroke, interventions to improve walking ability in people with stroke and other neurological conditions, and the development and use of rehabilitation engineering technologies to enhance recovery in people with neurological disorders. He has collaborated with engineering faculty to develop novel technologies that monitor walking activity and ambulatory assistive devices.

Fulk has authored numerous journal articles, conference papers, and textbook chapters. He is an author on 18 articles in peer reviewed journals, presented over 25 papers at professional and academic conferences, authored 3 textbook chapters and is an editor of one of the most widely used textbooks in physical therapy education, Physical Rehabilitation: Assessment and Treatment.

He has been a primary or co-investigator on research projects totaling over $1.9 million from the National Institutes of Health, the New York Physical Therapy Association and other funding agencies. He recently received the New York Physical Therapy Association 2010 Robert Salant Award in the Area of Clinical Research.

Fulk is an active member of the professional, university and local communities. He is the digital media editor and an associate editor for the Journal of Neurological Physical Therapy and serves as a reviewer for seven peer-reviewed journals. He is an elected member of the Norwood Norfolk Central School District Board of Education and has coached various local youth sports teams. He was recently honored as the Nova Southeastern University 2010 Distinguished Alumnus.
