Former Potsdam resident Jessica Shumway recently joined the staff at the Malone branch of the Community Health Center of the North Country as a physician’s assistant. She will begin work Sept. 1.
Originally from Potsdam, Shumway graduated summa cum laude in 2013 with a bachelor of science degree in biology from SUNY Geneseo.
She continued her education at the University of New England in Portland, Maine where she received her master of physician assistant studies degree in 2015.
She is enthusastic about giving back to a community that has given so much to her, according to a press release from the health center. In addition to assisting her patients with their health, she plans on being community oriented in her activities outside of work.
As a provider she looks forward to helping her patients have a better understanding of their overall health.
“The patient centered model is something I believe in strongly. Patients should have the information about their own health and be able to ask questions. I think it’s important for a provider to understand their patient’s goals [and] to understand what their vision for life is,” said Shumway.
Shumway is a member of the Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Maine Association of Physician Assistants.
She has also been a member of the Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad for six years.
To schedule an appointment with Shumway call the Malone practice, Creighton Road, at 518-483-0109.
