Army Staff Sergeant Steven E. Durham, a native of Fine, was recently named drill sergeant of the cycle at Fort Sill, OK.
He is also a 2001 graduate of SUNY Canton.
Durham entered active service in the Army in August 2005.
He has served at Fort Campbell, KY; Fort Drum; and currently is a drill sergeant for B Co, 1st Battalion, 40th Infantry Field Artillery, Fort Sill, OK.
Drill sergeants of the cycle are voted on “not only by their fellow drill sergeants, but also by the new soldiers that they train,” according to a press release from Linda Durham.
Durham has served in a variety of positions since entering the Army in 2005, including vehicle recovery operator, squad leader, shop foreman, battalion motor sergeant, maintenance control sergeant and platoon sergeant.
He has three combat deployments to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Durham is also raising his three children, Alexander, Samuel and Sofia.
