The Army ROTC Golden Knight Battalion at Clarkson University commissioned eight cadets into the U.S. Army at the annual spring commissioning on May 6.
The ceremony featured comments by Clarkson President Tony Collins and guest speaker Brigadier General Harry E. Miller Jr., the senior commander at Fort Drum. Miller, a product of Army ROTC, has served in the active force and the National Guard in a career spanning 31 years.
The ceremony also included the swearing in of the new officers, the pinning of their gold bars by family members, and the traditional first salute, known as the silver dollar salute.
Receiving their commissions were Clarkson seniors Charles W. Brewer, global supply chain management, Cohocton, N.Y.; Mark P. Lucas, global supply chain management, Penn Yan, N.Y.; Erin L. McTarnaghan, biomolecular science, Geneseo, N.Y.; Jeffery T. Phillips, global supply chain management, Fairport, N.Y.; Charles G. Rugg, information systems and business processes, Penfield, N.Y.; Colby C. Sortevik, history and political science, Pembroke, N.H.; Geoffrey B. Vantine, history and political science, Moretown, Vt.; and James L. Wheeler, mechanical engineering, Camden, N.Y.
Also recognized and being commissioned in the coming weeks were SUNY Potsdam cadets Andrew T. Bognaski, criminal justice, Lafargeville, N.Y.; I. Lety Richards, psychology, Black River, N.Y.; Jon C. Schumacher, criminal justice, Liverpool, N.Y.; Lorin N. Smith, psychology and criminal justice, Philadelphia, N.Y.; and Andrew O. Toyo, psychology, Canton, N.Y.; and St Lawrence University students Andres Ciro, economics, Wellesley, Mass.; Kaitlyn V. Fahsel, psychology, Watertown, N.Y.; and Christopher J. Shineman, history, Palatine Bridge, N.Y.
Jayson B. Keyes, mechanical engineering, Marion, N.Y., will graduate from Clarkson later this summer and commission at that time.
