POTSDAM -- Crane School of Music Professor of Voice Donald George interviewed some of the world's top classical vocalists for a book just released by Oxford University Press.
"Master Singers: Advice from the Stage" was co-authored by pianist Lucy Mauro. The book includes interviews with 21 opera singers, ranging from the most sought-after talents to the rising stars, including David Daniels, Joyce DiDonato, Thomas Hampson, Jonas Kaufmann, Simon Keenlyside and more.
Two Crane School of Music alumni, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe and tenor Dimitri Pittas are also featured in the book.
"The comments that Donald George and Lucy Mauro have collected from singers with successful careers should help to focus attention not only on technical problems, but also on how to become a communicative singing actor," tenor Plácido Domingo said.
With questions covering a variety of topics, including vocal technique, performance on the operatic and recital stages, vocal teaching and study, recording and performance anxiety, "Master Singers" is a fascinating read for musicians and opera lovers alike. Brian Zeger, director of the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Program, wrote the introduction to the book.
"Great singers at the top of the performing profession achieve their place with much analysis and awareness of their technique, art, interpretation and stagecraft that goes far beyond academic study, and develops over years of experience, exposure -- and the occasional embarrassing error," George said. "'Master Singers' brings these insights to the student, teacher, and emerging professional singer, giving them many needed signs and signals along the road to achieving their own artistry and established career."
