Sara Ong has been appointed operations officer of Air Force ROTC Detachment 536 and associate professor of aerospace studies at Clarkson University.

Ong received her bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and her master of business administration degree from Webster University.

In her position at Clarkson, Ong is responsible for recruiting, training, motivating and educating Air Force officer candidates. She supervises the cadet wing in the conduct of leadership laboratory activities. She designates leadership positions in the cadet wing, making sure each cadet officer serves at least one term in a qualifying leadership position.

Before this assignment, Ong worked on the systems engineering and cybersecurity of the next generation of GPS satellites, GPS III, at Los Angeles Air Force Base. She was also chosen as the mission integration operations test lead to ensure that the next-generation control segment meets the needs of the space vehicle operators.

She received her commission as second lieutenant in 2011 from Detachment 165, Georgia Institute of Technology and was promoted to first lieutenant in 2013. Her first assignment was within the Global Positioning Directorate at Los Angeles AFB, where she was responsible for the cybersecurity of test assets for the Global Positioning System.

Her decorations and awards include the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, National Defense Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Detachment 536 resides at Clarkson University and supports agreements with St. Lawrence University, SUNY Canton and SUNY at Potsdam to makes its program available to a wider student population.
