POTSDAM -- Matthew J. Manierre has been appointed assistant professor of sociology at Clarkson University.

A native to Glastonbury, Conn., Manierre received his bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2010, graduating summa cum laude from Eastern Connecticut State University. He received his master of arts degree and his Ph.D., both in sociology, from the University of Delaware.

Manierre's research interests are primarily focused on the relationship between social inequality and health outcomes. His current work has focused on improving how we measure successful aging and enriching our understanding of the social conditions that promote success.

His studies have been published in journals such as Health Communication, Social Science and Medicine, British Journal of Sociology of Education, Survey Practice and Field Methods.

His honors include being a nominee for the Ryden Prize for Best Social Sciences Dissertation at the University of Delaware; receiving the University Graduate Fellow Award; and being selected for the exceptional undergraduate poster presentation award from the Eastern Sociological Society.

Students at Clarkson will be able to join Manierre in the classroom, where he will be teaching introductory courses in sociology, social research methods, and medical sociology.

He also teaches an introductory seminar that focuses on the role of culture in defining what it means to be sick and how illness shapes our self-concept.
