Clarkson University Assistant Professor of Political Science S.N. Nyeck spoke recently in Senegal on public procurement reform and gender equality in Africa.
Nyeck was invited to take part in the eighth international symposium on “Citizenship and Women’s Empowerment: Obstacles and Challenges in Africa," organized by the Association of African Women for Research and Development (AAWORD), a pan-African research organization headquartered in Senegal.
Nyeck’s paper, titled "Outbidding Women: Public Procurement Reform Diffusion and Gender Equality in Africa," presents the first comparative study of the gendered dynamics within national procurement legislations in 16 countries in Africa south of the Sahara from 1995 to 2014.
The paper traces the gendered trajectories in public procurement liberalization in light of the World Bank’s recommendations for reform in the early 1990s.
The comparative study focuses on opportunities and challenges in implementing preferences for women-owned or led enterprises.
The work presented at the conference will be published in a journal of women’s studies later this month.
