Clarkson professor serves as visiting professor in Japan

Posted

Clarkson University research professor Dana M. Barry, who is also senior technical writer/editor at Clarkson’s Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP), recently served as a visiting professor in Japan.

She gave engineering design/STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) workshops in the Graduate School of Engineering at Osaka University titled “beverage engineers” and “using science and engineering to make music.”

The beverage activity provided an opportunity for students to create their best tasting nutritious fruit juice. It was an exercise in creative engineering and a STEM lesson.

It related to chemical engineering (the fruits, etc. contain various chemicals), materials science (students selected a specific material such as glass for their beverage containers), and creative design (students designed special containers for their beverages).

In addition, this activity simulated entrepreneurship because it gave the students an opportunity to invent and name a new possible product for consumers.

For the music project, the participants demonstrated how the science of sound relates to music, the connection of mathematics and music, and the use of technology for synthesizers and electric guitars, etc.

Various instrument types were presented, described, and played. Then the engineering students were asked to modify an existing musical instrument, combine several together, and/or design a new one of their own.

Barry also spoke at the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) at Suzuka College and at Toba College. She also delivered a lecture at Suzuka University.

In addition to her work at Clarkson, Barry serves as a professor and scientific board president for Ansted University, and has been a visiting professor overseas numerous times.

She is also a chemistry ambassador for the American Chemical Society and serves as an officer for its Northern New York Section.

Her research collaborator in Japan is Professor Hideyuki Kanematsu, deputy president of the National Institute of Technology, Suzuka College, Japan.
