Clarkson University Professor Summar West recently placed as a runner-up in a poetry contest.

Her poem, "The Gospel Choir Sings All Night, All Day the Angels Keep Watching," won runner-up in the 2016 poetry contest in the New South literary journal, according to a press release from Clarkson.

The poem appears in issue 9.2, this fall.

New South is a literary journal, publishing poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction, and is housed at Georgia State University. Author Anya Silver judged the poetry contest, the release said.

West's poems have been featured in a variety of literary publications, including 491, Appalachian Heritage, Appalachian Journal, Ellipsis, Still: The Journal and Tar River Poetry.

Her poem "First Church of the Rude Awakening" was previously selected as the Denny Plattner Poetry Prize for poem of the year in Appalachian Heritage, Clarkson said.

West holds a master's of fine arts degree in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a master's degree in social sciences from the University of Chicago.
