Clarkson University Assistant Professor of Humanities and Title IX Coordinator Jennifer Ball was recently named a contributing editor for Title IX Today.

The monthly subscription publication delivers the latest Title IX news, research and expert guidance. Ball's first article as contributing editor appears in the October 2015 issue, and she will contribute an article every other month.

Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments of 1972 states no person shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

Sexual harassment and sexual violence are viewed as discriminatory acts due to the denial of a person’s ability to consent and the negative impact of such acts on participation in educational opportunities.

Ball said her first article explains the concept of affirmative consent -- teaching someone how to ask for, recognize and understand consent in their everyday lives, according to a press release form Clarkson. She said people can get lost in the letter of the law, and she strives to help them understand the cultural element.

"The newsletter is meant to give people real-world analysis, solutions and best practices in implementing Title IX," she said. "A lot of people see the regulations but don't know how to translate it into the day-to-day, and that's where our expertise comes in."

Because of her experience as both a faculty member and Title IX coordinator, Ball said she can offer the nexus view of Title IX in the cultural context of college campuses. She said this unique opportunity that Clarkson has given her enables her to use this expertise on campus in an applied fashion.

"I really focus on making sure that we understand the current culture of college campuses and what's unique about the various campuses and how to make things sustainable within those environments," she said.
