Clarkson University Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Professor Suresh Dhaniyala was named the Bayard D. Clarkson Distinguished Professor in recognition of his research accomplishments.

Dhaniyala’s research is geared toward improving understanding of the role of aerosol particles on the environment, climate and human health.

In particular, Dhaniyala’s research activities include aerosol sensor development, ambient aerosol monitoring, advanced inverse modeling of aerosol sensor data, atmospheric aerosol sampling and measurements from aircraft, and fundamental understanding of particle adhesion to surfaces.

Dhaniyala’s external funding has totaled more than $3.3 million, and his current projects are funded by the National Science Foundation, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the U.S. Army and NASA.

He has more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, invited articles, and two patents.

He is currently serving as the secretary of the American Association of Aerosol Research and has previously served as a director on AAAR’s board.

Dhaniyala’s commitment to research and teaching has been recognized with the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2006.

He also received Clarkson’s John W. Graham Jr. Faculty Research Award in 2007 and the Pi Tau Sigma Faculty Awards in 2012 and 2015.

Dhaniyala received his bachelor of technology degree in naval architecture from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, his master of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Delaware, and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis.

Prior to joining Clarkson in 2002, Dhaniyala was a post-doctoral scholar in chemical engineering at California Institute of Technology.

The professorship, previously held by Professor Philip Hopke, was established through a gift from Dr. Bayard D. and his wife, Virginia C. Clarkson.

Bayard is a long-time member of the Clarkson University board of trustees, and he and his wife are life members of the Clarkson Roundtable. Bayard was awarded an honorary degree by the university in 1974, and Virginia was similarly honored in 1989.
