Clarkson University Distinguished Service Professor Spencer "Spence" Thew was recently honored by the American Society of Testing and Materials International (ASTM) for his service on Committee E36.
Thew teaches courses in construction engineering management and was the former director of the program.
Thew served more than 40 years with ASTM and served as chair of Committee E36, which develops and promotes standards for laboratories and agencies engaged in materials testing, inspection, calibration and systems analysis; standards for non-degree granting education and training programs; and standards for credentialing of personnel, according to a press release from Clarkson.
Today, more than 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance health and safety, strengthen market access and trade, and build consumer confidence, the release said.
Current Committee E36 Chairman and Clarkson alumnus Leo Titus presented the award to Thew, his mentor, in a ceremony.
Students and faculty assembled for the surprise award presentation during Thew's spring semester class.
"It was classes with Spence that turned me on to construction inspection," Titus said as he presented the award. "Spence was a key leader in this committee for many years and I am honored to follow in his footsteps."
Thew received a plaque commemorating his years of service with ASTM International.
"Thank you for this recognition," Thew said. "It was an honor to serve on this committee and make an impact on standards in construction for years to come."
