POTSDAM – Clarkson University Humanities Professor Joseph Duemer has received the 2011 Poetry Award from American Literary Review.

In addition to a cash prize, Duemer's poem "Lake Surface Full of Clouds" will appear in the spring 2012 edition of the American Literary Review.

Contest judge Joanie Mackowski said of Duemer's poem, "Stretching its keen observations and minutely choreographed sentences over the advancing paw prints of its lines, 'Lake Surface Full of Clouds' makes language ductile and makes the reader recall the animal and chemical pleasures of reading. This poem finds an atomic pulse: 'thing & song in their wild fullness full.'"

Duemer's scholarly and creative interests include contemporary American poetry, translation of Vietnamese poetry, and emerging online literary genres. He is the former poetry editor of The Wallace Stevens Journal.

His poems have appeared in many literary journals over the years, including the Iowa Review, the Georgia Review, the New England Review, American Poetry Review, Southern Poetry Review, the Tampa Review, and the Sun.

Duemer has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He was also a Fulbright Research Fellow in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The American Literary Review, a biannual journal, has been published since 1990 through the Creative Writing Program of the Department of English at the University of North Texas.
