POTSDAM -- Clarkson University Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Ruth Baltus will co-chair the 25th annual meeting of the North American Membrane Society (NAMS) this spring.
Baltus, who is co-chairing the meeting with University of Connecticut Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Jeff McCutcheon, said this event is considered the premier meeting in membrane science and technology, drawing hundreds of attendees from industry, academia and government labs around the world.
As co-chair, Baltus said she has been involved with everything from negotiating the hotel to selecting the topics for technical sessions.
NAMS 2015 will be May 30 to June 3 in Boston.
NAMS will feature presentations about the increasing use of membranes in a broad range of applications, Baltus said. For example, membranes are being developed for removing carbon dioxide from flue gas streams emitted from fossil fuel fired power plants and from natural gas streams.
Membranes also are used in biotechnology to purify pharmaceutical products. Other major applications include water treatment and desalination as well as use in medical devices such as artificial kidneys, or dialysis.
Baltus joined Clarkson’s faculty in 1983. She rose through the ranks and served as chairwoman of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from 2006 to 2012. She is currently serving her second term on the NAMS Board of Directors.
