Clarkson University Biology Professor Tom A. Langen was named the October 2011 Professor of the Month by the Network of Conservation Educators & Practitioners (NCEP) of the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation of the American Museum of Natural History.

NCEP is a global project to improve the practice of biodiversity conservation by improving training in biodiversity conservation. NCEP targets educators working with undergraduate and graduate students, and trainers working with conservation professionals in a variety of settings.

Langen was also recognized in August as a 2011 Ecological Society of America education scholar and was appointed a contributing editor of the EcoEd Digital Library (EcoEdDL).

The award supports the development of EcoEdDL and is made possible through a grant from the National Science Foundation. The goal of EcoEdDL is to provide scientists and educators a forum to contribute and locate peer-reviewed ecology education resources that are scientifically sound and pedagogically useful to prepare young ecologists for 21st century science.

Langen teaches courses on animal behavior, ecology, conservation biology, and global environmental change. He also teaches a course on tropical ecology, conservation, and economic development in Costa Rica.

He regularly leads a workshop on the environmental impact of infrastructure development for Latin American government agencies, universities, and environmental consulting firms. This summer the workshop was held in Tabasco, Mexico.

His current research is on the effectiveness of wetland restoration projects for restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services, and on managing the environmental impact of roads.
