Professor of Economics H. Sonmez Atesoglu of Potsdam was named professor emeritus at Clarkson University's 118th Commencement on Saturday, May 7. Atesoglu will be honored for 33 years of exemplary service to the University.

Over a career that has spanned more than three decades, Atesoglu has made important scholarly contributions in the areas of balance-of-payments and economic growth, defense spending and growth, and money and inflation. He is considered one of the top-500 economists in the world and has published research in more than 60 academic publications, including the Journal of Monetary Economics, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Macroeconomics, Weltwirtschaftliches Archiv, Kredit und Kapital, Applied Economics, and the American Political Science Review. He also served on the Managing Board of Editors for the Journal of Post Keynesian Economics.

Atesoglu has also been an exemplary educator in the School of Business at the undergraduate level and served on numerous committees, including the tenure committee and as chair of the promotions committee.

Atesoglu joined the Clarkson University School of Business faculty in 1977. Prior to his appointment, he served as an economist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. From 1987-88, he held a Fulbright Senior Professor Research Grant for a year at the Kiel Institute of World Economics in Germany. He also taught money and banking at San Diego State University in 2001. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pittsburgh.
