Clarkson appoints new assistant professor of consumer and organizational studies

Zhaleh Semnani-Azad was recently appointed assistant professor of consumer and organizational studies at Clarkson University.

She received her doctorate and master’s degrees in industrial organizational psychology, and honors bachelor of art degree in psychology and human resources management, from the University of Waterloo in Ontario.

Her research interests include negotiation and conflict, communication, culture and diversity, and group process. Her goal is to provide practical insights into cross-cultural negotiation, collaboration, and decision-making among employees, managers and negotiators.

She was previously a visiting scholar at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, where she conducted research as part of the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative. She was also an adjunct professor of organizational studies at York University, where she taught negotiations and international negotiation techniques to MBA and IMBA students.

She was also a lecturer and teaching assistant at the University of Waterloo, where she also mentored undergraduate students.

Semnani-Azad has consulting experience as a researcher for the PowerNoodle Software Company, a contract consultant for Spa Sales Consulting, a facilitator for the Waterloo Organizational Research and Consulting group, and as an internal consultant for industrial organizational psychology at the University of Waterloo.

She has written and co-written articles for management journals, and has scholarly manuscripts in press. She has made numerous invited talks at Clarkson University's School of Business, Columbia Business School, IESEG School of Management in Paris, Schulich School of Business, McDonough School of Business in Washington, D.C., Kellogg School of Management, University of Maryland, and Carnegie Mellon University.

Semnani-Azad also has shared her work through numerous peer-reviewed paper and poster presentations.

She is an ad hoc reviewer for Group Decision and Negotiation Journal, Management Research Review, Academy of Management Annual Conference, Administrative Sciences Association of Canada, International Association of Conflict Management Conference, Association for Psychological Science Student Research Award Reviews, Eastern Academy of Management, Southern Management Association, Academy of Management Africa, Academy of International Business and Emotions Network Conference.

Semnani-Azad has received numerous scholarships and awards, including the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Doctoral Scholarship.

Her work on culturally normative communication and negotiation strategies has been awarded by Kellogg School of Management's Dispute Resolution Research Center (DRRC), the Academy of Management, and International Association for Conflict Management.
