Craig G. Merrett was recently appointed assistant professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering at Clarkson University.

Merrett received his bachelor of engineering degree in aerospace engineering, with high distinction, from Carleton University and his master of science and Ph.D., both in aerospace engineering, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

His research interests include aero-servo-viscoelasticity, viscoelasticity, unsteady aerodynamics, and applied mechanics, according to a press release from Clarkson.

Before this position, Merrett was assistant professor in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Carleton University.

He also was a research assistant in the aerospace engineering department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the release said.

His teaching interests are in aircraft design, applied mechanics, viscoelasticity, and aeroelasticity.

He has taught courses focused on sustainable energy, including co-teaching a senior year engineering design project of up to 65 students from multiple degree programs who sought to develop a sustainable net zero energy community using wastewater recovery, advanced insulation, solar panels, and wind harvesting.

As a virtual researcher on call at Carleton University, he worked with a program that connects elementary and secondary school classrooms with experts in a variety of STEM fields through video conferencing, the release said.

He also discussed research and how to become an engineer with students across Canada.

Merrett has extensive administrative and supervisory experience, as well.

He has also been awarded a variety of research grants, the release said.

While at Carleton University, he received the Partners in Research - Virtual Researcher on Call, Expert Participation Award and the Carleton Student Engineering Society "Best Professor" Award.

At the University of Illinois, Merrett received the Roger A. Strehlow Memorial Award for Outstanding Research Accomplishment; AIAA Lockheed Martin Student Paper Award in Structures; Mavis Future Faculty Fellowship; and Postgraduate Scholarship - Doctoral, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

He is professional engineer in Ontario, and a member of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Society for Engineering Education, and American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
