POTSDAM -- Cynthia Baltazar, a doctor at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, was recently elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Baltazar is an internist who practices as a hospitalist, or specialist in the care of hospitalized patients, at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. She was formerly in private practice in Colton.

“Being able to place the letters FACP after one’s name is a mark of distinction reserved for those who have achieved the highest level of service to the profession over and above the practice of medicine, according to the American College of Physicians,” said a press release from the hospital.

“It is an indication that one’s peers in medicine recognize medical prowess that is enhanced by contributions to the broader community in which a physician lives and practices,” the release said.

Baltazar received her medical degree from the University of East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, Quezon City, Philippines, and completed her residency in internal medicine at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, NJ.

While in private practice in Colton, Baltazar served a wide rural region, with patients visiting her from Cranberry Lake and Tupper Lake.

For 15 years Baltazar was the community health officer for the towns of Fine and Clifton, and was also the medical director of the Emergency Medical System for Fine and Clifton.

When she moved to the Potsdam area she became the town health officer for the towns of Colton and Parishville beginning in 2004.

She has also acted as the medical director of the Emergency Medical Systems in Colton and Pierrepont from 2004 to the present.
