POTSDAM -- Jonathan Stinson, assistant professor of music at SUNY Potsdam recently won the 2015 9th annual International Anthem Competition of the First Baptist Church in Worcester, Mass.
Stinson won with his anthem “Beloved” for SATB choir, cello and organ.
Judges for this year’s competition were Grayston Ives, Kent, England; Rene Clausen, Moorhead, Minn.; and Peter Mathews of Palatka, Fl.
The first performance of his work was Sunday, May 3 at the 10 a.m. worship service with the Chancel Choir; Caroline Reiner-Williams, cellist; and William Ness, organist/director.
Stinson participated in the premiere, singing a short baritone solo.
Stinson’s operas and song cycles have been performed throughout the United States by several opera companies.
As an advocate for new music, he continues to champion new works for singers and opera.
He teaches studio voice and opera acting at SUNY Potsdam. He holds degrees from Oberlin College and Indiana University.
