One calf was lost and a barn was completely destroyed as the result of a barn fire at 2 p.m. Saturday at 967 County Rt. 6 in the town of Hammond. County fire investigators say a mechanical problem with the hay conveyor most likely started the blaze. The fire was discovered by a farm worker while loading hay into the upper loft using the hay conveyor. Wind hampered the efforts of fire departments on the scene from Hammond, Morristown, Brier Hill, Lisbon, Heuvelton, Rensselaer Falls, Ogdensburg, Gouverneur, Alexandria Bay, Fisher’s Landing, Redwood and Oxbow. The barn, owned by Wayne Bertram, was insured. Also Saturday afternoon, several fire departments battled a 10-acre brush fire in Rossie caused by burning garbage, and also intensified by wind. Fire investigators said one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat-related injuries. Photo submitted by Darlene Kron.
